Gwangju: An Overview of the May 18 Democratic Movement

Dara Helfrich

Dara Helfrich is a third-year student at Millersville University. She is majoring in International Studies with minors in History and Cultural Anthropology. Her main area of interest is South Korean history from the 1960s to the late 1980s, especially the development of the country and its democracy following the Korean War. This research was initially done during her independent study course in Spring 2024 on May 18th Democratic Movement (also known as the Gwangju Uprising), and updated during and after her study abroad experience. In Fall 2024, she studied abroad at Chonnam National University in Gwangju, South Korea, where she continued her research and learning on Korean history, specifically the uprising. Dara plans on pursuing a Master’s and a PhD in History. It is her goal to become a professor and publish more research related to Korean history and media. Outside of academics, she enjoys reading books that she checks out from the McNairy Library, watching movies, and listening to music from artists like David Bowie, SHINee, and Depeche Mode.
